The history of Reog

There are several popular stories that grow in people about the history of Reog and Warok, but one of the most popular story is the story of Ki Ageng Kutu’s rebellion, a minister of Bra Kertabumi, the last King of Majapahit Kingdom in 15 century. As long as we know that Majapahit Kingdom was the most powerful kingdom ever in Indonesia.

Ki Ageng Kutu angry to corrupt behaviour of the King of Majapahit Kingdom and the Chinesse Kingdom’s powerfull acquisition as the partner, he also see that the power of Majapahit Kingdom will be end. He leave the King behind and build a school that he teaches teenagers martial arts and spiritual arts with the hope that these teenagers will be grow as the power of next Majapahit Kingdom. But he realize that his army is too small to beating the army of kingdom, so the politic message of Ki Ageng Kutu was showed by Reog, this is the critics to King Bra Kertabumi and kingdom. The show of Reog is the way of Ki Ageng Kutu to develop the local people movement.

In Reog, lion head mask was known as Singa Barong, king of jungle, the symbol for Bra Kertabumi, and upper the head there are peacock feathers as seen as a big fan as the symbol of the Chinesse Kingdom’s powerfull acquisition. Jatilan, was shown by the Gemblak dancers who ride horse toy as the symbol of the great army of Majapahit Kingdom, which contrace with the power of Warok, a red mask clown as the symbol of Ki Ageng Kutu.

The popularity of Ki Ageng Kutu’s Reog finally cause Bra Kertabumi to attack the school, the rebellion of Warok was beated, and the school cannot continued to teching about Warok anymore. Eventhough, the Reog still has pleasant to show because it has already been popular in people, but the story has new plot and characters from the story of Ponorogo’s people such as Kelono Sewondono, Dewi Songgolangit and Sri Genthayu.
